I was playing in what many facilities call "The Memory Care Unit." It was about 2 o'clock on a sunny afternoon. I noticed a woman sitting right by the piano wearing bright yellow eye-shades with a big red heart over each eye. Like so many of our seniors with Alzheimer's and dementia,Toni seemed withdrawn and tired. Her head hung to the side and I'm fairly certain she was asleep - UNTIL THE MUSIC BEGAN.
As soon as I began playing, Terry's foot began to sway. By the second song the eyeshades were off. Soon afterwards, dear sweet Terry was clapping along and smiling; totally engaged in the music. Music can be very powerful indeed.
Contact me if you'd like for your residents hearts to be touched with the joy of music and memory.
